The Beauty You Choose to Keep
"The longer I live, the more beautiful life becomes. If you foolishly ignore beauty you will soon find yourself without it. Your life will be impoverished, but if you invest in beauty it will remain with you all the days of your life."— Frank Lloyd Wright
Years ago, I visited one of Frank Lloyd Wright’s homes. Everywhere I looked, something caught my attention. The details were intentional, each piece chosen not just for function but for meaning. I left inspired, but it wasn’t until I returned home that I realized how much the experience shifted me.
I looked around my own house with fresh eyes. Some of what surrounded me was meaningful, but much of it wasn’t. It dawned on me that my physical environment was affecting my mood. That was the beginning of a new awareness. Our outer world shapes our inner world.
Today, I try to be mindful about what I keep around me. In my small office space, I surround myself with things that ground and empower me. Plants, paintings, and even the spoons I’ve bent with my mind during meditation. These little reminders hold energy. They shift how I feel.
Recently, I visited a friend who had just moved into a small studio. With limited space, she only brought what mattered most. She couldn’t have been happier. Her joy reminded me that living with intention is not just about the space we live in. It is about the mental and emotional space we create too.
The thoughts we choose to entertain, the people we spend our time with, and the activities we commit to all contribute to our inner environment. When clutter builds up, whether in our homes or our minds, we feel heavy, distracted, or even disconnected from ourselves.
One of the gifts of writing is that it invites us back into presence. Writing thrives on slow noticing, deep feeling, and wondering. It highlights the simple, overlooked moments and excavates the mess until a gem appears. In a way, writing tidies up our inner landscape, helping us see clearly what was buried beneath the noise.
So here’s a gentle practice for the next time you tidy your home. Pause and notice. Which objects do you love? Which ones hold meaning? Which ones spark joy, and which do not? Let go of what no longer serves you.
And then, try the same with your mind. Begin by simply noticing. Not just your thoughts, but the quality of your thoughts. Are they nourishing or depleting? Encouraging or judgmental? The key is to notice without judgment. The last thing we need is to fill our home or our mind with blame, shame, or negativity.
There is so much beauty in and around you. Sometimes it is hidden under clutter, sometimes beneath old thought patterns. But it is always there, waiting for you to rediscover it with fresh eyes and a sense of wonder.
